London, England/london3-152Previous | Home | NextPriestley's home on Lower Clapton Road (in the village of Clapton) is identified. The area east (right) of Clapton was mostly undeveloped, except for Hackney House, which was the Hackney Academy where Priestley taught. Priestley preached at Old Gravel Pit Chapel, on a road which is the present Morning Lane. Its name came from a neighboring gravel pit created by sediments washed in by the brook. The St. Augustine's Tower is on Church Street, a northern extension of Mare Street (but today is called Mare Street as well). The St. Augustine's Tower is only 50 meters north of the Hackney rail station. Today the Silver Line of the rail service serves Hackney, Homerton, and Hackney Wick. |
